Something simple. You sign a message with your private key. You send it to relays. Any relays. Multiple relays. The relays do not coordinate. They do not share a leader. They do not require each other's permission to operate. Different relays will have different events. Your note might appear on six and not on a seventh. A reply might propagate in seconds to some nodes and take minutes to reach others. The state is inconsistent. The data is stale somewhere, always, at any given moment. And the harvest comes anyway.

Consistency, availability, partition tolerance. Pick two. Since partitions will happen, since networks fail and nodes drop and cables get cut, you really pick one. Consistency or availability. Convergent evidence. Different domains, same shape, the way different rivers find the same sea.

Not a buzzword in a whitepaper. Not a DAO controlled by the same twelve people who say it isn't. It means there is no centre to capture. No throne to seize. Your identity is a keypair that belongs to you the way your name belongs to you, not the way your username belongs to the platform. Your words travel across relays that do not own them. If one relay goes dark the words find another way, the way water finds another way, because that is what water does and what words do when the architecture allows it.

Email was a protocol and then Gmail became the platform. The web was a protocol and then Facebook became the platform. Each time the same movement. Open gives way to captured. The river gets dammed. The future arrives and then someone buys it and puts terms of service on it and hires a trust and safety team and the thing that was a river is now a canal and the people who built their lives on the bank are subject to whoever holds the engineering drawings. The entire history of the internet is this war. The protocols keep losing and building again.

A protocol has no headquarters. No terms of service. It cannot be acquired or shut down or pivoted toward a better monetisation strategy. It does not distribute itself through anyone. People pass it hand to hand the way people have always passed fire. The difference between a platform and a protocol is the difference between a canal and a river. One was engineered from above. The other found its own way through the territory and the territory remembers it.

The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it goes. Nicodemus was a rational man and rational men require diagrams and this was not something that could be diagrammed. Jesus was not describing ignorance. He was describing a different kind of knowing. The kind that does not require a map and cannot be converted into one without losing the thing it was about.

Any man who tells you he holds the record, of value, of speech, of what is true, of what God wants, is telling you he has built a tower and is inviting you inside it. The invitation will feel like access. Like being let into the place where things are known. The tower always feels that way from the outside. From the inside it feels like the world, because from the inside it is the only world the ledger contains, and the ledger is all you have to go on, and what is not in the ledger does not exist, and you are standing on the plain of Shinar watching the thing go up and the sky has no opinion about it and the efficiency is perfect and nothing will be withheld.
