Every ten minutes the network asks the same question. Did you do the work. Show me. The question does not care who you are or what you claim. It cares what you can demonstrate. Your curation is proof of work in this same sense. Your verification. Your authentication. The thought you actually applied to the source before you passed it along. You cannot fake it indefinitely. The network eventually finds out. The only way to pass the test consistently is to do the work consistently, and the only reason to do that is because you care whether the answer is true.

Lies are expensive. Not morally expensive, though that too, but economically expensive. They require maintenance. They require consistent repetition and the suppression of contradicting evidence and the management of everyone who knows better. Truth is cheap. It requires only that you say what you actually know and stop there. In an environment where everything is being replicated and distorted at speed, the person who consistently says what is true and nothing more becomes the rare thing. Scarcity in an abundant system. That is the only moat.

The demand for attribution assumes that recognition is scarce. That if your idea spreads without your name on it you have lost something. But an idea that spreads is an idea that worked. Someone used it. Someone's problem got solved. The idea did not diminish when they used it. You still have it. They have it now too. The only thing that was lost was the accounting of who deserves what, and that accounting was always a fiction. Treating it as real is the same mistake as treating paper as wealth.

No one designed the relay network. No committee approved the web of trust. No architect sat down and drew it out and got it funded and hired the team. It grew from people solving the problems in front of them with the knowledge they had, and the solutions fit together in ways no one planned because the problems were real and the knowledge was local and real knowledge applied to real problems tends to fit. Hayek saw this in markets sixty years ago. It has not stopped being true.

You cannot force the note to propagate. Other nodes will assess it on its own merits, without reference to the effort it cost you, without knowing who you are or caring. This is correct. This is how it should work. What you can manage is whether your attention was honest, whether your signal was clean, whether you were willing to say you were wrong when the evidence said so. Those things are yours. The rest of it was never yours to begin with.

Seeing something that could be and making it real. Using what you know to serve who you can reach. Trying until something works and then doing more of that. This is not new. This is how it always worked before the machine and it is how it works now, only cheaper, only faster, only with the execution cost low enough that the trying is no longer the obstacle it was. The obstacle was never the machine. The question was always whether what you see could become what you build. It still is. That part did not change.

The machine does not care if you build something or wait for someone to employ you. It does not have an opinion about your agency or your circumstances or what becomes of you. It will write the code either way, for you or for someone else, and it will not notice the difference. The market shares this indifference. Your local knowledge has value only if you act on it, and the acting is entirely yours to do or not do, and no one is coming to make the choice for you or to save you from having made the wrong one.

Not a type of person. Not someone born with capital or connections or a particular tolerance for risk. Someone who noticed that something could exist and made it exist. That is the whole of it. The noticing and the making. The gap identified and filled. You have been noticing things your whole life, the problems that irritate you, the needs no one is meeting, the obvious fix no one has bothered to build. The machine makes building the fix cheaper than it has ever been. The noticing was always yours.

Either you can act on what you know or you wait for someone to tell you that you may. Those are the options and there is no third one. The knowledge you hold about your market, your customer, your neighbourhood, your industry has value only at the moment you act on it. Waiting does not preserve it. The opportunity you see today is not the opportunity you will see in two years after the regulations are written and the licences are granted and the window has closed. The machine in front of you does not require permission. The question is whether the state will impose one anyway.

It doesn't arrive with jackboots. It arrives with good intentions and forms to fill out and licence fees and compliance requirements that seem reasonable individually and impossible collectively. Each one makes sense in isolation. Together they tip the calculation. When it costs enough to try, people stop trying. When benefits are easier than building, people take benefits. When the successful are taxed enough to make failure the better outcome, failure is what you get. Look at the cities where young people live with their parents into their forties and you are not looking at a technology failure. You are looking at a place where trying was made too expensive.
